How do you usually start your day?

If you’re like most people, the alarm goes off and your mind fills instantly with tasks, worries, and distractions. But Scripture invites us to begin our mornings differently, with God’s presence and peace.

In today’s devotion, you’ll hear wisdom from C.S. Lewis on those first moments after waking, and you’ll discover how Psalm 5:3 gives us a pattern for beginning the day with prayer and expectancy.

Main Scripture:

Psalm 5:3 – “Each morning I bring my requests to You and wait expectantly.”

By the end of this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why the first few minutes of your morning matter most
  • How a simple rhythm of prayer and Scripture resets your day
  • A practical step to push back the noise and start with God

Today’s Challenge:

Tomorrow, give God the first five minutes. Before you reach for your phone, pray Psalm 5:3 and invite Him to lead your day.

You know that moment when the alarm goes off and boom, your to-do list, worries, and notifications rush at you like wild animals? Well, C. S. Lewis, author of the Chronicles of Narnia series and many other works said the real battle of the Christian life actually happens right there in the first minutes of the what did he think we're supposed to do in that moment, before the coffee and before the emails? Hold that thought. We'll come back to it.

00:00:32.392 --> 00:01:29.052
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and today we're talking about how you start your day. It's easy to let the noise rush in first thing, but Scripture reminds us there's a better way, a way to begin each day with the presence and the peace of God and also prayer. Psalm 5, 3 says, "Each morning I bring my request to you and wait expectantly." Lewis wrote that our first job each morning is to push back the stampede, not by powering through, but by listening for that other voice, letting that other, larger, stronger, quieter life flow in. In other words, make space for God before the day makes claims on you. That's exactly what David practiced in

00:01:29.052 --> 00:01:40.733
3. "Each morning, he said, I bring my request to you a book, and wait expectantly." Now, notice the rhythm there.

00:01:40.733 --> 00:02:01.646
It's not frantic. It's not rushed. David had a relationship with God, and that's why this is so relational. David begins the day by turning his heart toward God and bringing his request to him, but also David is waiting.

00:01:56.748 --> 00:02:51.825
It shows us that David was waiting. Now, there's an expectancy or a trust that God is listening and that will meet him. And here's the reality: how you start your day often shapes how you live the rest of it. If you wake up and dive straight into emails, your news feed, or your or your stressors, your heart tends to carry that pace throughout the day. But if you begin by centering yourself in God's presence, you can carry that peace and perspective into the hours ahead. This doesn't have to be complicated. You don't need an hour-long Bible study to be focused. Although, you do need to spend time in God's Word often if you want to grow and learn more about him, and I believe live a life of purpose. But the first five minutes of your day can set the

00:02:51.825 --> 00:03:10.906
a prayer as you make coffee, a verse spoken out loud while you get ready, and maybe a pause to "Lord, this day is yours. Those simple practices can push back the stampede and often open space for God's voice.

00:03:06.645 --> 00:03:25.225
Over time, that morning rhythm will form a habit of trust and a daily reminder that before the world makes its demands, your Heavenly Father is with you and holds you. Now, tomorrow morning, give God the first five minutes.

00:03:25.225 --> 00:04:00.466
Before reaching for your phone, open your Bible or maybe recall a verse like Psalm 53, pray a short prayer of surrender: "Lord, this day belongs to you. Guide me, strengthen me, and use me, and help me to be a blessing to someone else today." Let those first minutes set the tone for your day. Father, thank you for the gift of a new day. Teach me to begin each morning in your presence, bringing your request to you, and waiting with trust.

00:04:00.466 --> 00:04:12.566
Help me carry your peace into everything I face today. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thanks for joining me today on Daily Devotions for Busy Lives.

00:04:08.885 --> 00:04:17.005
Remember, the way you begin your morning shapes your whole day.

00:04:12.566 --> 00:04:24.326
So start it with God. Come back next time for more encouragement help you live grounded in his truth. Until then, God bless, and have a great day.
