Trusting God with Your Kids

Trusting God with Your Kids

Parenting is less about control and more about faith. In this episode, discover how one mom’s trust in God shaped her son’s future, and how you can parent with faith, not fear.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed as a parent?

The truth is, none of us has all the resources or wisdom we wish we had. But God calls us to faithfulness in the little things and invites us to trust Him with the rest.

In today’s devotion, you’ll hear the story of Sonya Carson, a single mom in Detroit whose prayer for wisdom led to small but life-shaping choices that changed the trajectory of her son Ben’s life. Her story reminds us that faithful parenting isn’t about perfection; it’s about trust.

Main Scripture:

Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”

By the end of this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why parenting is less about control and more about faith
  • How small, consistent choices can shape a child’s future
  • A simple prayer to help you trust God with your kids

Today’s Challenge:

Pray this over your children: “Lord, help me be faithful in the little things, and help me trust You with the rest.” Then choose one small act of intentional faithfulness, read a story, pray together, or encourage them with Scripture.

In Detroit in the 1960s, a tired single mom, Sonia Carson, opens her son's report card and sees the F's. She has only a third-grade education, works multiple jobs, and the house is noisy, and she is exhausted.

00:00:13.856 --> 00:00:22.387
That night, she sits at the kitchen table and prays, Lord, give me the wisdom for my boys.

00:00:23.277 --> 00:00:28.097
What's a mom do when she doesn't have the resources, but she does have faith?

00:00:30.230 --> 00:01:07.510
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Léger, and today we're talking about one of the hardest things for parents to do, and that is trusting God with our kids. It's easy to slip into fear, but the Bible reminds us that faith-filled parenting means being faithful in the little things and leaving the outcome in God's hands. Our verse today comes from the book of Proverbs. I love the book of Proverbs. Most of it was written by one of the wisest men who ever lived, King Solomon. It's naturally a book of wisdom. It's made up of a series of Proverbs.

00:01:07.879 --> 00:01:17.790
A proverb is a short, pithy saying in general use, stating a general truth or piece of advice.

00:01:12.209 --> 00:01:36.760
It expresses a common truth that generally holds true, and it would be wise to incorporate the wisdom of Proverbs into your daily life. A great way to do that is to read through the book of Proverbs each month. And it's not that difficult. There are 31 chapters, a chapter a day for most months. Now, to today's proverb.

00:01:43.712 --> 00:01:43.893
Now, back to our story.

00:01:47.022 --> 00:02:01.373
sonia believed God gave her a plan. He cut the TV to a couple of shows a week and made a new house rule. Every week, read two library books and turn in written book reports to her.

00:02:01.873 --> 00:02:09.252
Years later, Ben learned that she had quietly marked up those papers, even though she could barely read. The habit stuck.

00:02:15.133 --> 00:02:32.573
Now, that's a praying mom living out faith in the ordinary. Oh, and her son, Ben Carson, grew up to become a world-renowned neurosurgeon, author, and leader.

00:02:27.973 --> 00:02:38.062
But the seed of that story wasn't brilliance. It was a mom's faith and her faithfulness.

00:02:38.622 --> 00:03:02.832
Parenting often feels like a tug-of-war between fear and trust. We want to protect our kids, guide their decisions, and we want to control their outcomes. But Scripture calls us to something different. Faithful parenting. Train them in the way they should go. Model integrity.

00:02:55.733 --> 00:03:21.212
And pray constantly. And then, show love and provide them discipline. And then, trust God with the rest. That's hard, isn't it? Because it means releasing the illusion of control. But the truth is, our kids aren't ultimately ours.

00:03:16.573 --> 00:04:12.241
They're His. We get the privilege of shepherding them for a season, but their story is written by the Lord. And here's the comfort. When we're faithful in the small things, things like reading with them, or praying with them, encouraging them, guiding them, and, I believe, most importantly, sharing the gospel with them, God is faithful in the big picture. We may not see all the results right away, but He promises our labor in Him is never wasted. So, parents, today, pray the simple prayer over your children. Lord, help me be faithful in the little things, and help me trust you with the rest. Then, choose one small act of intentional faithfulness. Read a story. Pray before bed. Or, encourage them with God's Word. Father, thank you for the gift of children.

00:04:12.330 --> 00:04:19.411
Give us wisdom to guide them, patience to love them, and faith to trust you with their lives.

00:04:16.031 --> 00:05:04.521
Help us to be faithful in the little things, and to rest in your care for the rest. In Jesus' name, amen. Before we wrap up today, I want to share something that really encouraged me this week. A listener took the time to send this message, and it reminded me that God's using these devotions in ways I may never fully see. Here's what they wrote. Thank you for reminding me the importance of worship. By giving my time to God is an act of worship. Thank you for that. I'd like to hear from you.
